Gordie Howe pursues better hearing at Helix Hearing Care Centre and urges other Canadians to follow in his footsteps
Windsor, Ontario, January 8th, 2010: Gordie Howe, a member of the Order of Canada and proponent for healthy hearing, recently took steps to address his hearing loss at the Helix Hearing Care Centre in Windsor, Ontario. He wishes to educate Canadians about the advantages of proper hearing care. "Hearing aids have minimized the burden hearing loss had on my life. My friends and family don't have to continually repeat themselves, and I rarely miss parts of conversations—even in noisier places. It's been a real positive life change for me, and I want to encourage others who suffer like I did to have their problem fixed too."
Mr. Howe's audiologist explained that he suffers from high frequency hearing loss, a common type of hearing impairment among seniors, that develops gradually over many years. This type of loss impedes the understanding of speech, particularly in noisy environments. With a gradual onset, this type of hearing loss makes it even more difficult to realize and accept.
As a result of his hearing loss, the audiologist at Helix prescribed and fitted Mr. Howe with two open fit hearing aids. "These hearing devices are unlike those that were dispensed a generation ago," says Jeff Geigel, President and CEO of the Helix Hearing Care Centre. Gordie's hearing aids are miniature behind the ear devices which deliver sound through a virtually invisible thin tube that fits over the ear and into the canal. "Hearing aids have come a long way, and should no longer be associated with cumbersome devices that are cosmetically unappealing," adds Mr. Geigel.
